This whole thing is just … sad. Sad all around. From Illewen who didn’t want to marry Kelgar, to Kelgar who only married Illewen because he felt he ought to, and now poor Netty being forced into prostitution (or at least that’s what it reads like) … I hope that baby is a girl, too.

Kelgar and Illewen need to talk. Seriously, maybe she won’t mind him sleeping around, maybe she will. But they ought to at least talk about how they’re both miserable. Maybe if they talk, they can find some sort of solution or at least way to make life more bearable.

I feel bad for Kelgar, he doesn’t seem like a bad man at all and maybe he does deserve some – relief. I hope he figures out what to do, or what’s “right” I certainly can’t say what’s right, if I were the man I would probably go through with it, if I were the wife I would feel betrayed. Rawrr! Tis so confusing!!

Huh. You know… Kelgar actually impressed me here with his hesitation. He’s really grown up recently; the old Kelgar wouldn’t have thought twice about it.

I almost feel like Illewen won’t mind if she finds out, not really. I kind of hope she does, though. If she does, then maybe she likes him more than she lets on and maybe they have a chance to be happy.

Reynard is also, a strangely charismatic sort of guy. You could see that the townspeople were hanging on his every word before so there must be something about him. But you’re right, a lot of girls are vulnerable to confident men, Maire particularly since she has been in the situation were she’s never really had a man interested in her in a society where there is a shortage of men.

I look at him and imagine him to be a very hairy, sickly sweaty kind of man, but I can see how she might be drawn to him, especially since he’s so forward. And I think that’s often what happens in the real world too, when girls are approached by guys who are actually confident and sure footed in what they’re after, the girls are all confused because they don’t know how to act or what to say… It’s not like there’s a handbook on that sort of thing. I imagine this is Maire’s situation right now, she just doesn’t know what to do.
