Hepsie cries for help

Hepsie heard Mella’s terrified screams and rushed into the room. She was greeted by the sight of the nun frantically clawing at her face, her hands covered in blood.

“Sister!”, she cried, “What are you doing… stop it… your face!”.

Mella did not respond, only scratching at herself more desperately, whimpering pitifully like a dog that has been struck. Hepsie caught a glimpse of long, bloodied cuts running across her face.

She could not stop the other woman from injuring herself with words only, so Hepsie ran towards her pinning Mella’s arms to her side. Now that she was close she could see the deep gashes made by Mella’s fingernails, and the rivulets of blood running down her face.

Mella squirmed for a moment, fighting against Hepsie’s grip, but for such a small woman Hepsie was very strong and eventually she gave up and went limp in her arms.

Hepsie carefully let go when she was sure the other woman’s hysterical frenzy had subsided.

“Mella! What are you doing? … your face! What has happened?”, she tried to order her thoughts but the questions came out in a jumble. She could not understand why Mella would want to injure herself like this.

She was horrified when the other woman began to laugh, a soft chuckle which gradually became a hideous cackle. She felt sure now that the Sister had completely lost her mind.

She was even more disturbed when the nun began to stare at her intently, as a hawk may watch a small mouse far below him, waiting for the right moment to swoop down and tear apart its body. Mella was biting her lower lip so hard that a dribble of blood had begun to run down her chin adn drip onto the whiteness of her nightgown. Her face was twisted into an ugly grimace, a look of rage directed at Hepsie.

Even so she was not expecting it when the woman suddenly leapt at her her fists clenched and her eyes vacant and mad.

The first blow collided with Hepsie’s soft face with a loud smack. The pain immediately shot down her spine as her head jerked back. Her eyes filled with tears as the second blow hit her in the stomach, pushing the air out of her. Mella was growling now, gnashing her teeth and speaking grating words that Hepsie could not understand. She did not even know if they were real words.

Hepsie tried to defend herself, but the other woman seemed to be infused with a superhuman strength now and she could barely protect her face from the fists which rained down upon it. She became certain that that the nun was intending to kill her.

“Help me… someone… Steen!!!”, she screamed out her voice shrill with terror, hoping that it would carry far enough for Steen to hear her, “STEEN!!!”

Mella had now wrestled her to the floor and was clawing her body with her fingernails, kicking her as Hepsie moaned in pain and terror. She felt her ankle twist at an awkward angle beneath her body and heard a dreadful crunching noise. She shuddered in agony as she lay cowering on the floor.

Then she heard heavy footsteps and the sound of a body being thrown into the wall. Two strong arms were wrapping around her battered form and she felt herself being lifted off the floor. She wrapped her arms around Steen’s neck and began to sob as he carried her out of the room.

Poor Hepsie! It couldn’t have happened to a nicer lady. :-(

At least Steen could save her! Her own hero! Those two are quickly turning into my favorite couple. After Alexis & Morven I think, though Steen & Hepsie are fun both together and separately, whereas Alexis & Morven are best enjoyed in combination. (I think Alexis would agree with me there.)

I’m afraid poor Mella’s wandering-around-unattended days are over. Even if she is “only” mad, this is a medieval-like world, and they will probably think she is possessed by unclean spirits anyway. What are they going to do with her, though?

  2. Mao says:

Ack! Not Hepsie!! Poor Hepsie… she’s too nice to be hurt by a crazy nun. Poor Mella, though. She’s losing her mind.

I’m really curious as to who “he” is and what all of this is about, exactly. Does it have to do with the freaky island?

Will there be an exorcist like scene where they try to ‘cast out’ the evil demon in her? Or are they just going to lock her up? I can’t imagine either will result well…

  3. Lothere says:

Ooh, I would love to see an attempted exorcism. I wonder what would come of it?

I would also love to see how Father Harndall would handle that role. That has to be a scary job for a priest.

  4. Verity says:

Hmmm… a medieval exorcism… that is a cool idea. Unfortunately I have other things in store for Mella… but I am going to file that one away maybe for later use.

At the moment she is locked up in that room… but it is still the same night so more to come. I didn’t want to labour the point but Steen did lock her in when he left with Hepsie.

I guess we haven’t seen Alexis and Morven apart that much… they do seem to be funnier as a team. I really like their dynamic.

  5. Pandora Moon says:

Hi. oh no poor Hepsie! at least Steen was there to resure her.

you know while I was reading this I was listening to a song called “sister of mercy” by The Thompson Twins which seems to fit the mood of the story since it’s about a woman who goes nuts and kills her husband (I think?)

ok so I’m going to assume that whatever is possessing Mella has something to do with the islands curse?.

    Keep Simming!

    See ya.

  6. Verity says:

That sounds like a very fitting song Pandora :) it’s funny that it was playing at the same time you were reading the post.

  7. Aithne says:

No! Not Hepsie! She’s probably the most likely victim, being both there to help her and too kind to ignore Mella . . . oh, but what’s happened to them both? Fractured ankle, ouch. I hope you have a physician around, or some skilled person who can take care of that.

It’s interesting the most tortured woman in Mhalwe attacked the least tortured woman in Mhalwe. Hepsie will have her own set of problems from this (fear, guilt, &c;) and thanks to Mella, who I can’t really hate, even. *sniff*

  8. Verity says:

Unfortunately Hepsie IS the most skilled medical person on the island, being the midwife. Which makes it a bit difficult.

  9. Cearbhaill says:

Poor Hepsie. And poor Mella. I want to keep reading but I need to go to bed (it’s 4am!). This should make for some interesting dreams about this mysterious man and Mella’s reflection in the mirror anyway.

  10. Verity says:

Ugh I hope you don’t have too many dreams about Mella’s reflection. It’s pretty horrible. I find mirrors so scary in general… always think there will be something horrible looking out at me (often there if it is early enough :) ) or something scary standing behind me.

  11. Cearbhaill says:

I definitely had a dream where Lothere’s Dantalion was tangling with a zombified Mella and the voice. It was more comical to me than scary. But there were definitely creepy moments. Poor black and batty Dantalion got his butt kicked.

  12. Verity says:

You had a Mhalwae dream! Hurrah… I haven’t even had one of those yet. Poor Dantalion :( He is always getting the raw end of the deal these days.

  13. Lothere says:

Hey! Dantalion would totally crumple The Voice up and sweep the floor with him! And as for zombified Mella… hmmmph! How do you think Druze got the way he is? And that was just second-hand magic! I think a Druze vs. Zombie Mella fight would be interesting though.

It is so amazing that you are combining the two stories in a dream. I had a Dantalion dream the other day (actually, now that I think about it, it was Dre), but it only involved helping him get his driver’s license. It wasn’t even funny, it was just stressful, because I am terrified of driving.

  14. Cearbhaill says:

In Dantalion’s defense, he couldn’t see the voice, which made it hard for him to fight it. I wish I could bend dreams to my will though, I would love to see a Druze vs. Zombie Mella fight. :D

I’m surprised I combined them, but even more surprised that I remembered it. Stressful dreams are never good. Hopefully your next story related dream will be better.

  15. Verity says:

I laughed so hard when I read about your Dre driving test dream Lothere :) I think it would be stressful teaching him to drive, I can imagine him being very antsy. I find driving really stressful too… knowing that it is so easy to crash and die. Ugh. It took me three goes to pass my driver’s license test, mostly because not only am I scared of driving I am really bad in test situations… I get so nervous.

And I am inclined to agree that Dantalion would beat them hands down.Takes a dragon to really mess that guy up :) But Druze vs Zombie Mella would be interesting. They might end up friends… hey your skin is gross and green too… whahey!

  16. Lothere says:

Dre was really snappish as I recall.

“You need to–” *reaches over helpfully*

*swats hand away* “I know what I’m doing!”

    *squealing brakes*
